VMware migration
CLIENT: Client is a global enterprise in the finance sector, managing a complex and large-scale IT infrastructure to support their operations worldwide.
CHALLENGE:
The client sought to modernize their virtual infrastructure to enhance performance, scalability, and security. Their existing environment, built on legacy virtual machines (VMs), required an upgrade to leverage modern virtualization technologies.
The primary objective was to migrate workloads from existing VMs to either new VMs (V2V) or containerized environments (V2C), based on specific needs. This migration aimed to reduce overhead costs, enhance developer productivity, and ensure robust security.
SOLUTION:
- Assessment & Analysis
An assessment included reviewing the current virtual environment, workloads, and requirements, and assessing migration strategies and tools. The analysis provided insights into processes, resources, and documentation needed for a seamless migration.
- VM Migration Plan
Based on the assessment, we developed a detailed migration plan. This plan determined whether workloads should be transferred to new VMs (V2V) or containerized (V2C). Activities included detailed reporting on the current VMware environment and workloads, recommendations for the migration approach and a Statement of Work (SOW) outlining the proposed migration plan and estimated costs.
- Configuration of the New Environment
Prior to migration, we deployed and configured the new virtual environment to meet customer-specific needs, ensuring compatibility with the previous environment to minimize downtime. This preparation involved setting up VMs and containers on the new platform to seamlessly receive existing workloads.
- Automation & Migration
With the new environment ready, we developed and configured the appropriate migration tools for an automated migration of customer workloads. This involved installing and configuring necessary migration tools, developing automation for the selected migration method (V2V or V2C), migrating workloads to the new virtual environment and testing to verify the functionality of all newly migrated applications.
RESULT:
- Enhanced Scalability and Flexibility
- Cost Efficiency
- Improved Developer Productivity
- Robust Security
